NAR Design will join Aussie Broadband at the Rising Sun Hotel, Auburn on Friday the 25th of September 2015 between one and five in the afternoon for an informal afternoon Q&A session and you are welcome to come along and ask questions, check your address and sign up.

Fixed wireless towers have recently gone live in the Clare and Gilbert Valleys in South Australia between Watervale and Tarlee, including Leasingham, Auburn, Undayla, around Saddleworth, Rhynie, Riverton, Giles Corner and Tarlee with a tower at Owen servicing Alma. NBN Fixed wireles offers speeds of 25Mbps download and 5Mbps upload with the promise of 50/20Mbps before the end of the year.

The NBN install is free for standard installs and if you sign up on a 24 month contact Aussie Broadband will provide a preconfigured wireless router for free as well.

These speeds come with cost effective quotas and you can choose whether you still need your landline, migrate the number to an internet service (VOIP) or do without and save.

The National Broadband Network has come to Watervale and Auburn in the form of Fixed Wireless with speeds of 25Mbps download and 5Mbps upload.

What does this mean for business and families? You now have the option of faster internet with significant cost savings over mobile broadband with large quotas available if you are in the coverage area.

The install is free and includes a wireless router on a 24 month plan and options to convert your fixed line phone number for added savings.

Windows 10 Versions – which to choose

Windows 10 Editions Compare Table Most people thinking about upgrading to Windows 10 will be using the same hardware (laptop, desktop, all-in-one or convertible) for the upgrade. But if you are planning a new computer, network or just replacing the odd machine, which Windows 10 license do you require?

Here is a list of the features from Microsoft. If you are after just the differences between versions, skip to page two.

Some of the considerations might be:

Will you connect to an on site Microsoft server or Microsoft Azure service?

Do you need to remote into other computers with Remote Desktop?

Is there a need to run a virtual machine on your computer?

Is your business or software vendor creating an App for the Windows store?

Do you have a requirement to schedule updates in the future?

Welcome to Windows 10

The latest evolution of Windows operating systems for home and business is here with Windows 10 and some of the biggest news is that it is a free upgrade for those with a suitably licensed Windows 7 or Windows 8 computer.

Other drawcards include protection, device management, productivity and integrating new types of devices.

Microsoft have studied data breach attacks in detail to build features in Windows 10 that protect against modern cyber threats and prevent them from happening. Passwords are becoming a thing of the past as we move towards more secure options such as biometrics and hardware-based multi-factor credentials.

50 Years of Moore’s Law

I remember reading about Moore’s Law more than 25 years ago and wondering how long it could continue. As it turns out – a very long time.

Gordon E. Moore co-founded Intel and in 1965 he wrote an article predicting that the number of components (transistors, resistors, diodes or capacitors) in a dense integrated circuit would continue to grow exponentially. This observation became known as “Moore’s Law”.

I remember the comparison of the development of the first Intel integrated circuit, the 4004 and car development while studying Electronic Engineering at Uni in the 90s. Now that comparison is massively further apart.

If cars had developed at the same rate as the integrated circuit, today they would go almost 480,000Km/h, would use only 0.000117607 litres per 100km and cost around 5 cents to buy.

So the next time you are looking for some new computer hardware, just take a moment to consider just how good that technology is.

How to Stop Social Engineering and Targeted Attack Emails

NAR Design has just registered our first <businessname>.farm domain for a client. So instead of “john@smithrural.com.au” we can now have “john@smithrural.farm” with the website at www.smithrural.farm.

It is as simple as .agency, .beer and .coffee. You could be into .fitness or .photography. Have a look at the options and get into your .zone.

These are just the beginning of the expansion of domain names with many more expected to hit the market soon.

NBN Fixed Wireless Construction Started in Blyth

The NBN has finally come closer to our part of the world and recently the National Broadband Network (NBN) Fixed Wireless network construction has started in Blyth, just west of the Clare Valley.

Today (24/10/14) the tower was erected at the site on Benbournie Road with further work to be carried out to connect the tower to the rest of the network.
